Spirits Run High in Callaway County

Imagining a spirited October adventure? Head to Callaway County and make it come true! Just name your preference: ghosts and ghoulies, wine and cocktails, or just general high spirits. Fulton and Callaway County has an event for you.

Crowds of visitors make the trip to Shryock’s Callaway Farms an annual family outing. Located between Columbia and Kingdom City, Shryock’s offers a 16-acre corn maze, pumpkins, campfires, a fun barn, jumping pillow, giant gumball machine and more. The Shryock family has been farming northern Callaway County for five generations and is excited to host public and private guests every weekend from September 16 - November 6. Fridays & Saturdays, 12 - 9 p.m. Sundays, 12 - 6 p.m.

Fischer Farms across the river from Jefferson City offers a corn maze, pick your own pumpkin patch, guest musicians, hayrides, a gift shop with Missouri made products and more. Fridays, 4 - 9 p.m., Saturdays & Sundays, noon - 6 p.m.

Celebrate Samheim – the Gaelic harvest festival – Oct. 22, 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at ElderBlossom View Winery in New Bloomfield. Enjoy music, art booths, food and drinks, with music going until 8 p.m.

The Renaissance was famous for its high spirits. You can experience them firsthand at the Central Missouri Renaissance Festival, Oct. 22-23, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Set in the sleepy Irish village of Carlingford (just a short distance from Kingdom City, MO) the festival features multiple stages, 50 artisans in the Artisan’s Market, a craft guild, kid’s realm and dozens of characters, from pirates to royalty.

Serenity Valley Winery sits on 60 rolling acres between Fulton and Columbia. Grab a spot near the lake while you sip and wait for one of Serenity Valley's spectacular sunsets. The winery’s Saturday Music Series features a band and food truck pairing that starts at 4 p.m. The Sunday Serenade Series starts at 2 p.m. There will be a Halloween costume party with DJ on Friday, October 28, 6 - 9 p.m.

With its vintage architecture and brick streets, Fulton’s downtown Brick District is the perfect setting for Halloween fun.

  • Saturday, October 29, catch a test screening of a
    local, independent film Shakespeare’s Mummy
at the Brick District Playhouse, Fulton’s 1920’s theatre. There will be a 5 p.m. showing, a red carpet walk at 7 p.m. and an 8 p.m. showing. Halloween costumes are encouraged! Cash bar and food available onsite.

  • Of course, the cutest spirits come out on Halloween itself – Monday, October 31 - during Trick or Treat in the Brick District from 4 - 6 p.m.
A loop of monster prints starts at the Playhouse Cafe, 7th and Court Street. Court Street will be closed all the way to 5th Street, so all the little goblins, witches, superheroes and princesses can collect their bag full of goodies.

Whether your preference runs to harvest fun, medieval manners, or things that go bump in the night – your best bet for a spirited October is spending your time the Callaway.
